What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is the process where the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth and the tooth’s root. This condition occurs gradually over time and often the person is unaware it is happening. It can be caused by aggressive brushing, using a hard-bristled toothbrush, gum disease, grinding, clenching your teeth and natural aging.

Without proper gum coverage, root sensitivity can occur, as well as erosion of the root surface. The erosion can worsen over time, producing a weakness in the tooth.

Benefits of Gum Recession Treatment

In addition to improved aesthetics, having gums that properly cover the roots of your teeth is very important for your dental health. The roots of your teeth are softer and more sensitive to damage and decay than your harder, more durable tooth enamel. Proper root coverage not only protects your roots but provides needed structural support for your teeth as well.

Our Gum Grafting Procedures

One effective way we treat gum recession is with conventional soft tissue grafts. For this, we take tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and graft it onto the affected area. Our doctors use special methods to make this surgical procedure comfortable and so that it requires very little, if any, dressing to be applied to the tissue removal area. The benefits of this method are long-term stability and rapid healing because we are using your own tissue.

In more severe cases, our doctors often use tissue from a donor bank that has undergone stringent testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, such as Gem21® or AmnioSpark™. With these donor tissues, larger areas of recessed gums can be treated all at one time.

Our doctors also incorporate plasma-rich growth factors into the grafting procedure when gum recession is quite severe to stimulate gum regrowth and healing. Emdogain® gel is a revolutionary product that utilizes a protein to stimulate regrowth of gum tissue that has been lost due to severe recession or gum disease.

Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique

A revolutionary advancement in treatment for receding gums is the Pinhole Surgical Technique. This allows our doctors to treat large areas of receding gums at one time without the need for invasive surgery. By creating a pinhole-sized access point, they can gently shift the gum tissue to cover the exposed tooth roots. No sutures are required, and a full-mouth procedure can be completed in just one visit!
